How do you prove to someone they don’t remember all the things they no longer remember? Taking Selma’s Car is about a family doing all they can to cope and take care of an aging loved one. Selma Kinderman is a spunky and headstrong eighty five year old mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. It doesn’t matter what Selma’s children say, in her eyes Selma is a perfectly able “eighty three” year old woman who has an immaculate driving record. Selma is blind to the fact that she is experiencing major signs of dementia and possibly the early warning signs of Alzheimer’s. Throughout the play, Selma’s son Robert, daughter Miriam, and son in law Jeremy tirelessly work to revoke Selma’s driver’s license. They are constantly worried Selma will not only hurt herself, but that she will end up hurting or possibly killing other innocent drivers. Despite all the comical attempts the family makes to prevent her driving it is evident Selma’s quick wit shows no signs of aging, and she successfully foils all their plots. But in the end, even with irrefutable evidence of her brain damage, Selma refuses to give up her independence.see less
